REVIEW: Apollo Junction - Light up The Sky

Slamming into your speakers from today, Leeds five-piece Apollo Junction have released the growling, stomping anthem that is Light Up The Sky into the wild - and it is a beauty!

With overtones of classic rock tracks of the ‘70s cosying up with some seriously modern synth (and an opening that doesn’t half remind me of The Cult), the rhythms are tight, melodies on point and the bassline absolutely filthy, with more fuzz than a vintage jazz mag and a cracking build up to a trademark Apollo Junction singalong chorus.

Of course, it’s not solely about the music - there’s a strong message here about the need for togetherness, particularly in these challenging times. A song to grab your mates and holler along to when pubs are back open and gigs back on, it is, the band say,

“...the song that we have aimed to write since the day we formed Apollo Junction”.

This camaraderie shines strongly through all the band’s work, with tracks such as Forever’s message of “we belong together now” reinforcing that group spirit and support. Light Up The Sky builds on this with an anthem to holler along to en masse, a call to get on board and be uplifted rather than gazing at your shoes.

If this track, along with their first release of 2021 - On The Ropes (also reviewed on here, at some point I’ll get round to reviewing other bands, honest) - is anything to go by, it’s going to be wall-to-wall bangers. Not that any of us would complain at that! For anyone new to the band, do check out their debut album, Mystery - If I Fell showcases the more mellow side that they do just as well. But for now, let’s enjoy the swaggering power of the more recent releases and look forward to singing along in person later this year.

A band in their ascendency, Apollo Junction are gathering an army of fans on social media, as well as attracting praise from Steve Lamacq, Graham Norton and Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa amongst many, many others. They’ve announced a host of gigs and festival appearances, added below. Grab your tickets while you can - you don’t want to miss out. Plus, you can nod sagely when they’re filling that Kasabian-sized gap in the market and say you were there...

Hit up the band’s socials to interact, grab yourself a gig ticket and treat yourself to some merch to support the lads and look cool as fuck at the same time. Winner.
